Be a Decisive Producer, Director

As a producer and director apprentice at CCM, there are few days that go by that I am not in communication with someone on my team. One of my main responsibilities is to make decisions and instruct my team. It is important that I am decisive when giving my team direction because the last thing your DP wants is for you to come on set and not know what you want for different shots. It’s the same for every aspect of production.

Here are 3 reasons it’s important for a producer, director to consistently be decisive.

1. You know the ins and outs of the video being made.

As the producer and director, you would be the one who knows the most about the production. You are the one who is in charge of planning and making sure the video turns out well. You have to make sure you know what you want while still being open to suggestions from other people of your crew because you crew may make suggestions and you will need to decide whether or not it will be beneficial to the piece.

2. You are leading a team.

If you are a leader of a team but you can’t make decisions, how would the project ever get completed? As a producer/director you are in charge of driving your team, and if you can’t make decisions there will be a roadblock to a successful end project. You need to be assertive in the decisions you make to be a good influence for your team and to drive them to the same excellence.

3. It helps get stuff done.

The quicker you are able to make decisions as a producer/director the faster you team can start working. Often times you don’t have a ton of time before your deadline anyways, so being able to make these decisions quick will only make the process faster.
In the end, the importance of making decisions as a producer/director all leads to getting a successful, professional final project.
